Recap of the 20th Roar, Lafayette IN, 1987 July 2nd: 50th Anniversary of the Diasappearance of Amelia Earhart Registration. Sweet Shop closed early. They threw us out. Slayter Center. Filled helium balloons, put in message to Amelia. Paper airplane contestants ined up on stage and threw planes. Children and adult contests separate. Longest child: Noch, longest adult: Lee. Shortest child: Anna, Shortest adult: foreign student. Children's best design: Jenny, Adult's best design: Katie. Nancy read Amelia's poem, "Courage." Whole crowd, including non-Tuna attendees, sang Amelia Earhart's song. It was inspiring. Judy described the event on WBAA during the day. Dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Some people didn't make it. Very authentic. Some people may have considered it a little sleazy, but others appreciated the atmosphere. Jim and Judy have accident in new truck - $1200 damage. They didn't make it to the Mexican restaurant. Party at Jay and Maryann's. Teaton Tea ritual, Amelia Earhart and movie from Purdue narrated by Mike Wallace, made in the 40's. Actually, the Teaton tea was Teaton Tea flavored drink product. No pine needles over 10,000 feet. Jay read an inspirational list of events that occurred in 1937. Spider smoked cigarettes and drank beer. Children appalled. Square dancing ensued. Judy led undrunk Tunas in diving for clams, oysters and can of tuna. Mike was robbed and so was Pete. July 3: Dance at the Lafayette Conservation Club Preparations for the hog roast begin about 7:37 AM, Lincoln presiding over the hog, Judy presiding over Lincoln. People arrived from far and wide early and late. The whole hog was roasted and and devoured. Fruit salad by Nancy, baked beans by Linda, (?? illegible) by Nancy, sauerkraut by Judy. Volley ball, beer drinking, kicking of tires. Pete and David blowing up balloons, supervized by Leilah. There were many surprise arrivals. Designer tunas decorated the ceiling. The Tuna Jug Band warmed up the crowd. The Hormones were the featured band. Ben provided a half-time show by tap dancing and singing Yankee Doodle Dandy. Magnificent Tuna cake acquired by Nancy was cut with fanfare, also a knife. Door prizes. The grand prize was by Dale and John. Puny prizes by Mike and Michelle. Marv and Cathy played acoustic music outside. As cleanup finished, a young man came to inspect the place. A 5 AM phone call from the Conservation Club caretaker to Judy indicated the young man was not an inspector and the place was trashed. Lynn and Maryann went to [the next page is missing] July 4th: Pancake breakfast at Fort Ouiatenon, roar to Portland Arch Breakfast - mmmm. Pancakes that really did flip, bacon, eggs, fruit, sausage, maple syrup. Chefs: Dan, Pete, Bill, and somebody else. It was over promptly at 1:00 so we could all meet at the Pub and roar to Porland Arch. Portland Arch. We gathered at the Pub promptly at noon. Then we waited for everyone to show up. There were 16 motorcycles running at the same time. Scott drove the only surviving pickup truck, hauling the broken bike that he trailered down from Minneapolis. Spider and Linda led 6 Tunas into a gas staion. Half the Tunas stopped at Big Daddy's for root beer. Shot the moon over Miami at Portland Arch. Carl's second truck had a flat. We had fun. Naj, etc. went skinnie dipping. Carl fell down and busted open an eye - 17 stitches. We created Roman fountains in the waterfall. Melinda in the waterfall was magnificent. The rest of us were OK. Then we came out and got hungry, and there was dinner in the van - boss grooge. Then we went to Dick's grave. Presented him with beer, bourbon, controlled poopy. Dick said thanks. Lynn blindly led us home. The line of bikes and cars was beautiful. Beautiful lights leading us over hills and around curves through the rain to the Stabilizer. The upstairs became very crowded by fearful students as we remained on the first floor. In yet another Tuna feeding frenzy, we consumed 4 Noble Romans Maximus pizzas (37 pounds of Mozarella) in 12 minutes. Bob appears in a cloud of smoke. Didn't know there was a 20th Tuna Roar. By the way, four of the bikes on the roar were Limeys and 5 were Krauts. One was Merican. July 5 Potluck at Don/Kathy's residence (aka Lincoln's old place, aka the place where Judy shot herself in the head - no damage done.) We all ate food and handcuffed Gene so he couldn't leave Lafayette. Anna was attacked by wasps. Bob's equipment came to the rescue. We had a fire in the woods and played kazoos.
